With a rich heritage that dates back to 1979, our foundation was laid in the scenic landscapes of Devon by Chris Piper, Chairman, alongside his close friend and Managing Director, John Earle. Our origins are deeply rooted in the art of winemaking, with Chris Piper bringing his invaluable experience from Beaujolais, as a wine-maker in Brouilly, into the very essence of the company.

Meet The Sales Team

Chris Piper (Chairman)

One of the founding partners of Christopher Piper Wines, establishing the company in 1979. Having graduated from UCL, Chris’ original plan was to teach history but his involvement in the Beaujolais region, where he started as a harvester, at Château des Tours (Brouilly) in the mid-1970’s, meant a change of tack. Training as a wine-maker and subsequently becoming an oenologist, was part of his journey into the wine trade. Chris started CPW with his friend, John Earle and the two of them remain at the helm of the company, continuing to explore and develop new wine regions for the West Country’s hospitality businesses. Chris is responsible for managing the sales team and also, with John, selecting the ever-changing range of wines.

When not working at CPW, Chris has been researching and writing his book on the Beaujolais region. Besides this, he is involved in Devon cricket also loves cycling and gardening.

Claire Roberts: Devon

Pip Vanham: Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset

Originally from York Pip has worked in the wine industry across many disciplines for 24 years, the last 10 in Devon, and is a self-professed nerd about the stuff. She is a huge foodie and loves to travel, explore and absorb new places, so combining all 3 is how she spends most of her time off. Food and wine matching is her speciality along with wine training and she loves nothing more than empowering your team to have more confidence with their wine list. Her go-to wine would be Italian but what, from where, and how much would very much depend on the time of year, the food, the company, and of course, who’s paying! If it’s not a glass of wine in her hand it would likely be a G&T. Or just Tea, Yorkshire, of course.

Pip holds the WSET Level 4 Diploma and is a judge for the International Wine Challenge.

Harriet Malloy: Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Bristol, Bath, North Somerset

Harriet grew up in the Cotswolds and developed a passion for wine in her late teenage years. Her career as a flight attendant with British Airways gave her the opportunity to travel extensively, discovering the incredible diversity of wines from around the world. From visiting hidden vineyards to exploring historic port houses, Harriet has always sought out unique wine experiences wherever she goes.

Since settling back on solid ground, she has worked at an award-winning English vineyard and winery, deepening her knowledge and appreciation for both traditional and modern winemaking. Now, she brings that enthusiasm and expertise to our team, helping to grow our presence across Bath, Bristol, and the Cotswolds.

Harriet holds WSET Level 1, 2, and 3 Awards in Wines, the WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits, and the Court of Master Sommeliers Level 1 Award. She is currently working toward CMS Level 2.

• Advice & Sourcing: Because of the wide range of skills and experience that are available from amongst our team, we are able to offer in-depth advice on every aspect of wines & spirits, wine lists, pricing and margins, glassware and food and wine matching.
• Wine list Creation & Designe: We offer high quality in-house design and printing for restaurant, hotel and pub wine lists. Our experienced sales team can help create a really interesting, balanced wine list, tailored to your requirements.
• Training: For over thirty years, Christopher Piper Wines has put together a comprehensive training programme for customers who would like their own restaurant teams to develop their knowledge of service and wines. This can be provided at a wine range of levels, depending on the experience of the individuals concerned.
• Glassware: We can offer free loan of function wine glasses (Paris goblets, wine flutes and ISO tasting glasses) to all our trade customers.
• Riedel Restaurant Glassware: fine Austrian wine glasses. As Riedel’s West Country distributors, with whom we work very closely, we hold a wide range of their Restaurant glassware which we are able to offer at sensible prices.
• Exclusive Selections: Not forgetting, we proudly offer the Chairman’s Beaujolais Nouveau, a unique wine produced annually by Chris Piper himself at Chateau de Vaux in Brouilly, embodying the passion and expertise that CPW stands for.
